February 2nd, 2009

red wine pillIn the search for more answers to fight cholesterol and obesity, scientists are turning to red wine and the wonders that it can do to the human body. A new drug being studied contains the components found in red wine may help people control weight even if on a bad high fat diet.

The GlaxoSmithKline experimental drug SRT1720 was tested on mice and was found to be 1000 times more effective than resveratrol. The drug helped the mice burn extra energy and control the levels of their insulin and glucose.

Resveratrol is a component found in grapes and red wine which provides a lot of health benefits including prevention of cardiac disease.

A previous study about resveratrol proved that it is very helpful in lowering the insulin and glucose level of diabetic patients. Among red wine drinking populations, the incidence of cancer and heart problems is significantly lower.

The drug is still in the testing phase and the mice used for the study reacted well with the drug. Those exposed to high doses for three months did not gain any weight despite their high fat diet. Those which were subjected to a lower those did not get the same favorable effects.

The drug being developed is designed with the same enzymes that are activated when a person goes to the gym and is so far believed to be safe. The mice during the experiment even gained endurance and strength which may be favorable for humans.

The red wine pill or the SRT1720 is still along way to go before it reaches your local drug store. For now, try to stay active and enjoy your red wine in the glass.
